June 2022 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

The Vancouver Magic Circle's monthly meeting took place on Thursday, June 23 2022. Before the official start of the meeting, there was a jam session amongst the members. The meeting officially opened with Graham Kita greeting the members and guests.

Then Roy Hopwood presented a workshop on the professor's nightmare. He showed his handling of this classic piece of magic. He showed some moves and techniques and some false counts that looked very convincing. During his workshop he and Graham Kita handed out the ropes to the members so that they could follow along with him. He also took the time to show two of the club's newest junior members the finer points of this effect. There were also some lecture notes along with some illustrations and the history of the professor's nightmare. (yes, actual paper notes) Well done Roy. Everyone enjoyed the workshop.

The competition for June was for the Ray Gamble trophy. This trophy is awarded in recognition of excellence in card magic. Competitors are handed a brand new deck of cards with the cellophane and seal still intact. The timing starts after the competitor has removed the wrapper and opens the seal. The seal must be opened by hand. The cards must be used as they are from the box. And nothing else may be used during the routine. The jokers and the box may also be used. The cellophane wrapper may also be used. Any additional items will result in disqualification.

Last year's winner, Jordan Vo was in charge of the competition. He was also the host and MC for this competition and he also read the rules. The competitors (in order of appearance) were Yoosik Oum, Roy Hopwood, Genpei Cai and Rod Chow. The timekeeper was Gabe Gabini. In between the performances, Jordan told magic stories while the scores were being tallied by computer by Simon Cassegrain. Rod Chow was the winner of the Ray Gamble trophy for 2022. Congratulations to Rod and to the rest of the competitors. The trophy will be on display at Hidden Wonders.

After the competition, Henry Tom performed the latest version of his close-up act that he competed with at I.B.M., PCAM and FISM North America. It's a great act about learning to become a Tooth Fairy and was well received by the members. Well done Henry.

Performing their three tricks in order to become a member of the Vancouver Magic Circle were Simon Cassegrain and Gabe Gabini. Simon did his three tricks at an earlier time via zoom, but he wanted to do it again in front of a live audience. After that, the club's newest junior members, Blake Aleong and Jack Schwartz did their three tricks performances.

For snack time, Cameron Minty made a braided bread loaf, Claire-ly Lee brought some apple and strawberry pastries. Thanks everyone. Dennis Chan brought cookies and made the coffee. Photography was done by Graham Kita. Videography was done by Cameron Minty and Rod Chow.

Former Vancouver Magic Circle member Ray Wong has decided to rejoin the club. The club signed up two new members. Thanks to Shawn Farquhar for giving Dennis "The Bulldog" Chan a ride to and from the meeting. First VP, Yoosik Oum did an excellent job of running the meeting as president Care Elise Dyck was away on a personal matter.

There were 21 members and 6 guests in attendance.
