April 2022 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

With the easing of the COVID-19 regulations, Graham Kita was able to secure our meeting hall for the April meeting. The monthly meeting took place on Thursday, April 28 2022.

Before the official start of the meeting, Jordan Vo, our card master gave a workshop on card stripping and card splitting. Everyone enjoyed the workshop. After the workshop, president Care Elise Dyck officially opened the meeting and welcomed the members and was happy to see the members in person again.

The competition for April was for the Charles Howard trophy. This trophy is awarded in recognition of excellence in magic using gimmicks in a card effect or routine. During the course of the routine, a gimmick must be used (i.e a gimmicked card, gimmicked wallet, gimmicked device etc.) The spirit of this competition is to encourage the use of gimmicks to enhance magic. Scott Jansen and Jordan Vo are in charge of the competitions.

Jordan Vo was the host and MC for this competition. The competitors (in order of appearance) were Kim Fabbro, Roy Hopwood, John Stenning, Graham Kita, Bill Lee, Scott Barker, Chris Estrada, and Jack Schwartz. It was nice to see Jack Schwartz participating in the competition. He is the club's newest junior member. Keep up with the good work Jack. Although this is an adult competition, juniors are also allowed to compete in this contest. The time keeper was Scott Jansen. Jordan Vo told jokes in between the acts while the scores were being tallied. He also invited other members to tell jokes in order to keep the competition flowing. Simon Cassegrain and Care Elise Dyck tallied the scores with their computers. The winner of the Charles Howard trophy for 2022 was Graham Kita. Congratulations to Graham and to the rest of the competitors.

Jordan did some card magic after the competition. The business portion of the meeting was the announcement for the May competition which is a close-up competition for the H.B. MacLean trophy. Graham Kita, Simon Cassegrain and Care Elise Dyck took photos of the evening's events. It was a fun and enjoyable evening for everyone. For refreshments, besides the usual coffee, Graham Kita provided bottled water, Claire-ly Lee brought a chocolate cake, Dennis Chan brought cookies and Cameron Minty brought an apple dessert. Thanks everyone.

There were 25 members in attendance.
