June 2021 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

The Vancouver Magic Circle meetings usually start at 7:00 p.m., but because of the popularity of the meetings via Zoom, president Rod Boss decided to open up the meetings fifteen minutes earlier in order to give the members some time for a chat session and to talk magic. Rod officially opened the meeting by greeting the members and out of town guests.

To start the meeting, a lecture was put on by Josh Janousky . The lecture was taken from the I.B.M. jam series and was played for the members. Josh was not live via Zoom, but just a recording. He opened the lecture by showing the members how to penetrate a pen through a folded bill. He explained in great detail on how to fold the bill and how to present this effect. He also mentioned that it also works with plastic bills. Next was a card effect by using a smart phone. He also performed a card effect by using the glide. He presented a very entertaining card effect by using the two red Jacks and the two black Jacks where the different coloured Jacks changed places from hand to hand and on to the close- up pad. He called this effect the Jumping Jacks. He also explained the set up and performance of this effect. He also demonstrated some card techniques and sleights. Rod thanked Josh for a great lecture.

After the lecture it was competition time. The competition for June was for the Ray Gamble trophy. This trophy is awarded in recognition of impromptu card magic. Under normal conditions, competitors are handed a brand new deck of cards with the cellophane wrapper and seal still intact. The timing starts after the competitor has removed the wrapper and opens the seal. The seal must be opened by hand. The cards must be used as they are from the box and nothing else may be added during the routine. The Jokers and the box may also be used. The cellophane wrapper may also be used. Any additional items will result in disqualification.

Scott Jansen was in charge of this competition. Seeing as this contest was done on line, the competitors had to supply their own cards. They had to prove to the members and in front of the camera that the deck was a brand new deck with the seal still intact. Scott Jansen read the rules. Last year’s winner, Rod Boss was the host and MC for this competition. The competitors ( in order of appearance ) were Simon Cassegrain, Scott Barker, John Stenning, Rod Chow, Jordan Vo and Gary Robins. Rod Boss was the timekeeper. The winner was Jordan Vo. Simon Cassegrain came in second place. Congratulations to Jordan and to the rest of the competitors. Jordan is a very dedicated member of the Vancouver Magic Circle.

In between the acts, Rod told magic stories while the scores were being tallied by Scott Jansen by using the new scoring app which was created by Dr. Simon Cassegrain. Apparently this new scoring system is working out very well.

The business portion of the meeting included the possibility of having a picnic in late August. Normally the club supplies all the food and refreshments for the picnic. Even though the COVID-19 has slowed down quite bit, it was decided that all those attending will have to bring their own food and refreshments because of health and safety concerns.

After the competition, Rod Boss performed a prediction effect which was similar to the mental-eptic effect. Rod will be taking a survey in the future to see if the members would like to carry on the meetings via Zoom. Rod thanked the executive and the committee for all their dedication to the club. John Stenning thanked Rod for producing the 2021 roster book. There are still a few left for purchase. The evening ended with Robert Teszka taking over as the Zoom host with a chat session amongst the members.

There were 28 participants in attendance.
