August 2021 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

The club’s annual picnic took place at King George Park in Richmond on Sunday, August 29 2021. This was the first live gathering of the club since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Normally the club supplies all the food and refreshments. But for health and safety concerns it was suggested that all those attending the picnic bring their own food and refreshments.

Arriving at the park early to set up for the picnic were Graham Kita, Terri Kita and Rod Boss. Graham Kita was in charge of the picnic games. The games included the usual card tossing game and the water balloon tossing game. The winner of the card tossing game was Jonathan Santiago. His card ended up a quarter of an inch from the “pin”. He won 11 decks of cards which included two Theory 11, a jumbo deck of Bicycle cards and an awful bunch of collectable cards. Congratulations to Jonathan and to all the other card tossers who took part in this game. Rod Boss and Graham Kita supplied the prizes.

The water balloon tossing game is always a fun event at our picnics. The water balloon partners were Simon Cassegrain and Genpei Cai, Scott Barker and Cameron Minty, Ken Cowie and Rod Boss, Bill Lee and Claire-ly Lee, Graham Kita and Roy Hopwood, and Scott Jansen and Harmony Woodington. The winners were Rod Boss and Ken Cowie. They both each won a Tim Hortons gift card. Congratulations to Rod and Ken.

The watermelon eating contest is always a popular event at our picnics. Because of the COVID and other health and safety concerns it was decided that this event be cancelled. This is always a fun filled event with plenty of laughter.

Genpei Cai and Ken Cowie were showing each other their favourite card effects. It is always nice to see members sharing their magic. The highlight of the afternoon was a magic performance put on by some members of the Vancouver Magic Circle for the public and their family and friends. Rod Boss was the MC for this event. The performers ( in order of appearance ) were Graham Kita, Roy Hopwood, Genpei Cai, Bill Lee, Yoosik Oum and Rod Boss. During the show Roy Hopwood and Genpei Cai also qualified for their fifteen minute programme in order to earn their Wand Holder’s Degree. Congratulations to Roy and Genpei.

Photography was done by Graham Kita, Terri Kita, Rod Boss and Simon Cassegrain. Rod Boss made moving a slide show of the performers which he posted on the Vancouver Magic Circle facebook page. Cameron Minty brought a carrot cake that was in the shape of a top hat and rabbit. Simon Cassegrain also brought a cake. Thank you. Graham and Terri Kita picked up the bottled water and chips and a Tim Hortons gift card which was used as a prize for the water balloon contest. He will be reimbursed. Terri Kita was the Helping Hand. Dennis Chan signed in the members and guests.

It was nice to see Bill and Claire-ly Lee at the picnic. Many thanks to Graham Kita, Rod Boss and Roy Hopwood in helping with the write up of the report. Many thanks to Graham Kita, Terri Kita and Rod Boss for organizing the picnic. Although it wasn’t quite the same as in past years, it was still a fun event. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

There were 18 members and 5 guests in attendance.
