September 2020 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

The September meeting is always a fun and friendly event. It is the club’s annual auction. This year’s auction had to be cancelled because of COVID-19 rules. Government regulations ordered all nightclubs and banquet halls closed for health and safety reasons. Our meeting hall is classified as a banquet hall. The auction may take place at a later date.

Wiley Allen, our treasurer has left the club and has moved back to Ontario to look after his father whose health is not well. The club thanks Wiley for all his time and dedication to the club. He still intends to be an out of town member of the Vancouver Magic Circle. Roy Hopwood, our secretary will be taking care of the treasurer’s duty in the interim.

On Thursday, September 17, the Vancouver Magic Circle hosted a lecture featuring the Amazing Spidey. He is an international hypnotist/mentalist with many appearances on international TV shows and networks. The lecture was held online via Zoom. Many thanks to President Rod Boss for hosting this talented performer. The Vancouver Magic Circle covered the cost of the lecture.

Rod introduced and welcomed Spidey and he also welcomed the Vancouver Magic Circle members and out of town guests. The first part of his lecture was practical magic. He performed an effect with matchbook matches with a torn and restored burnt match ending up in the mouth. Using Jordan Vo as an assistant, Spidey did an effect with a post-it note which was torn and restored. He did a card trick called a Blast from the Past using the ambitious card principle and ended up with the deck where the faces and backs ended up being blank. Several of Spidey’s effects required the use of an assistant. Seeing as the lecture was done via Zoom, Spidey performed some effects by playing the role of the performer/spectator showing how the effect would look like if there was a real live spectator present. During the mentalism part of his lecture, he performed a matchbook match prediction called match match using a thumb tip. He did a card effect using the Ouija board principle. He performed an ESP card effect with a psychic phenomenon séance routine with cards that were secretly marked. Spidey’s magic is very entertaining and convincing.

Rod thanked Spidey for a great lecture. There were 47 participants in attendance.
