January 2020 Ring Report

The January meeting started off with a recap of the club’s events for the 2019 magic year by Bryn Williams. He thanked the executive and directors for all their hard work and dedication throughout the year. He also thanked Alex Zander and Billy Hsueh for organizing and putting together a fantastic Three of Clubs convention. He also asked for more members to help fill in certain duties such as refreshments, photography, and the newsletter.

Billy Hsueh announced that the 2020 installation banquet will be held at the Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club in Coquitlam. Many thanks again to Billy Hsueh for organizing the banquet. The featured performers for this event will be Chris Gowen and Dominguez Camilo.

This was Past President’s night, an occasion where Past Presidents are invited to join in on the fun and present their one trick to the Circle that they helped build. Past Presidents Alex Zander, Greg Dietlein, Billy Hsueh, Graham Kita and Roy Hopwood performed their one effect. This was also one trick night where members are invited to perform a magical effect. Bryn Williams was the moderator for this event. Performing their one effect were Cameron Minty, Ed Goldberg, Yoosik Oum, Rod Boss, Robert Teszka, Mike Vetterli, John Stenning, Wiley Allen, Gabriella Lester, Bryn Williams, Chris Estrada, Jeff Mcleod, Matthew Jones and Jordan Vo.

Ballots were handed out for the Murray award. The Murray award is for the most creative performance during the course of the year. The Stan Kramien trophy is awarded for showmanship in a performance during the course of the year. The winners will be announced at the installation banquet.

This was also election night for the 2020 executives. Billy Hsueh presided over the election process. Positions to be filled were President, 1st VP. 2nd VP, secretary, treasurer, and sergeant-at- arms. The board approved slate for this year is : President- Rod Boss, 1st VP-Care Elise Dyck,- 2nd VP- Yoosik Oum, treasurer,- Wiley Allen, sergeant-at -arms,- Dennis Chan. Henry Tom was also nominated for 1st VP but he was not in attendance. Roy Hopwood was nominated for secretary. Billy Hsueh invited additional nominees from the membership for the above positions. There were no other nominees. By acclamation, the above nominees have accepted their positions. Congratulations to the new executive for the 2020 magic year. They will be sworn in at the installation banquet. Other committee members are Scott Jansen, and Jordan Vo. They will share the duties of the competition chair. Gabriella Lester is the junior director and Graham Kita is also another director.

Alex Zander talked about the 2020 I.B.M. convention which will take place in Pittsburgh in July. He also mentioned that the I.B.M. has plenty of “Keep Calm, perform magic” Tee-shirts and other I.B.M. merchandise available for purchase. Robert Teszka talked about Yagger’s, a sports bar which also has an entertainment room for those who want to do some live performances like magic, ventriloquism and comedy. It was nice to see Jeff McLeod a former VMC member. He plans to rejoin The VMC and the I.B.M. He is presently living in Squamish.

This was also initiation night for the new members who have not gone through this ceremony in order to become a full fledged member of the Vancouver Magic Circle. Members who were initiated were Ken Cowie and Roy Hopwood. Alex Zander conducted the initiation process. Congratulations everyone.

Rod Boss supplied the refreshments. Graham Kita took photos of the evening’s events. Cameron Minty did the videography. There were 29 members and 2 guests in attendance.
