August 2019 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

Another quick and fun filled magical summer has come and gone! Some members went to the I.B.M. convention in Scottsdale Arizona and some went to Magic Live in Las Vegas and some went to both conventions.

Congratulations to our own Vancouver Magic Circle member Alex Zander who was sworn in as the next I.B.M. International President for 2019/ 2020. Alex holds the distinction of being the youngest elected President in the long history of the I.B.M. He is just 27 years old. This special event took place at the Scottsdale I.B.M. convention.

The club’s annual picnic took place on Sunday, August 25 at King George Park in Richmond. Arriving at the park early to prepare for the day’s events were Graham Kita, Terri Kita and Gabriella Lester. There was the usual hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, macaroni salad, soft drinks and chips. Many thanks to Graham and Terri Kita for picking up the supplies for the picnic. Steve Braybrooke, along with his friend Darlene supplied a commercially sized barbeque, a pop corn machine and a cotton candy machine. Cameron Minty brought some Japanese desserts. Dennis Chan and Graham Kita worked the barbeque.

Graham Kita was in charge of the card tossing contest and the water balloon tossing contest. Our always generous prize donor, Graham Kita likes to reward the people who participate in the picnic contests. He donated the prizes again this year. Gabriella Lester was the winner of the card tossing ” closest to the pin ” contest. She won several collector decks of cards.

Miyabi Tashiro and Kim Fabbro won the water balloon tossing contest. They won a pair of super soaker guns. Miyabi is a guest from Japan and is staying at Kim and Pearl Fabbro’s place. She is here to learn more English.

And of course what would the afternoon be without the club’s most popular picnic event, the watermelon eating contest. In this contest, a watermelon is cut into wedges, placed on a tarp, and then covered with whipped cream. Contestants are then blindfolded, on their knees, and with their hands behind their backs, the ” eating ” begins. The person who eats the most ” red ” within the three minute time limit is declared the winner. The contestants were Mike Mayfield, Scott Janson, Gabriella Lester, Graham Kita, Jonathan Santiago and Miyabi Tashiro. The winner was Scott Janson. He won water balloons, a frisbee and a football. Cameron Minty was the MC for this event. Well done Cameron. This is a very popular contest with plenty of fun and laughter.

Scott Janson and Rod Boss performed their 15 minutes of magic to qualify for their Wand Holder’s Degree. Well done guys. Throughout the afternoon several magicians were showing each other their favourite card moves and sleights. Graham Kita, Terri Kita, Chelsea Kita and Rod Boss took photos of the afternoon’s events. The Helping Hands were Terri Kita, Chelsea Kita and Darlene, Steve Braybrooke’s friend. Darlene helped set up the pop corn machine and the candy floss machine.

Many thanks to all those who helped with the clean up. It was another fun and successful magical picnic. There were 18 members and 19 guests in attendance. Many thanks to all those who made the afternoon a success.

Many thanks to Kim Fabbro for doing some repair work on the Ray Gamble trophy. Note: If you have not bought your 3 of Clubs Convention seat, there is a limited number of registrations available and we will sell out. So don’t delay or you will be disappointed! The club’s annual auction will be on Thursday, September 26. So, if you bought “stuff” at last year’s auction, and haven’t used yet, bring them to the auction.
