Spotlight On - Rick Mearns (From
an interview with Mike Norden)
Q: Rick, so how did you get into magic?
A: I got my first taste of magic in Grade 5, when my best friend’s dad fooled me with a couple tricks. We kids dabbled in it for awhile, but nothing serious. It wasn’t until around the age of 12 when the cravings for magic came back again, all thanks to the Dale Harney Magic Palace on TV. A couple phone calls later and I was filling up on gourmet magic lessons from my 2 amazing mentors, Len Hiebert and Stuart Lang.
Q:
Have you won any awards?
A: (Laughs) Yes, second place, 3 years in a row, in my junior years at the I.B.M Western Regional Conferences from 1972 to 1974, being surpassed by a different competitor each time. There was also a first place award locally, as a junior magician way back then. In recent years, I’ve won First Place for Best Card Trick (VMC) and First Place for Best Children’s Entertainer (PCAM).
Q: What are you up to these days Rick?
A: Lately I’ve been keeping really busy with mostly corporate events and just had a banner year for myself. It's still important to me to keep my hand into working restaurants and pubs, since they give me a place to polish out routines, and they’re great for meeting new clients and prospects. You can also find me at the occasional jam session playing drums, as long as my back is holding out.
